yes you can. or, i should say that it can be done. i'm not sure if you should do it. as long as you prime the wood and fill all of the butted edges giving you a uniform underlayment. also, the product that you put down must be somewhat flexible be cuase there will be some flexing of the wood. the products that you would buy from your home improvement store will probably not hold up as you would like them to, but here's an inexpensive way to accomplish what you are looking to do.
prep your floor as i have suggested above. paint it with a 100% acrylic paint. use a couple of coats, add designs if you like. then top coat it with a couple of coats of clear acrylic top coat.
this is not as durable as an epoxy floor, but it is something you can do yourself. depending on how rough your family is on the floor, you should get several years out of this.
